Bah Humbug!

Christmas is rapidly approaching and I have to admit I've been having some trouble getting into the holiday spirit this year. I'm not sure if it's the recession taking the fun out of shopping or the 60-degree days making it feel more like spring than December, but something is different. But now with the first snowfall of the year last night and today's company gift swap, it finally feels like the holidays to me and I'm excited!

I'm looking forward to watching Christmas Vacation and Elf over and over and over again, going to see the tree in Rockefeller Center, baking Christmas cookies, egg nog, hot chocolate, hanging out fireside and having 11 days off!

This Bank Can't Fail

More than 35 million Americans, including 12 million children, either live with or are on the verge of hunger. In New Jersey alone, an estimated 250,000 new clients will be seeking sustenance this year from the state's food banks. But recently, as requests for food assistance have risen, food donations are on the decline, leaving food bank shelves almost empty and hungry families waiting for something to eat.

The situation is dire, no more so than at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ), the largest food bank in the state, where requests for food have gone up 30 percent, but donations are down by 25 percent. Warehouse shelves that are typically stocked with food are bare and supplies have gotten so low that, for the first time in its 25 year history, the food bank is developing a rationing mechanism.

To really understand the serious need for donations, use the following link to view the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXH_aBJKcE4

If everyone could just do a little, it would help those in need a lot. To help, you can:
  • Make a monetary contribution: Visit www.njfoodbank.org.
  • Donate food: Drop off a bag of food at your local food pantry. Click here to find a food pantry near you: www.sefan.org.
  • Organize a food drive: We can help explain the logistics of starting a food drive. Just call 908-355-FOOD.
  • Help "Check Out Hunger:" Look for the "Check Out Hunger" coupons at your local supermarket and donate. No donation is too small!

Weekend in Review

There was a lot going on this weekend...here's some highlights:

Friday
It was my best friend's 24th birthday and we figured what better way to celebrate than head to our favorite local dive bar. (Don't judge us, the drinks are free.)

Saturday
After a long night out, I was up bright and early to participate in my first 5k. While it took me a littleeeee longer to finish than I would have liked (which might have had something to do with the bday bash the night before) I still had a great time with my co-workers and was happy to support such a great cause.

Sunday
With Halloween approaching, it was time to carve our pumpkins. They turned out pretty good -- ours is the ghost!

Trip to Alstede Farms

I recently visited Alstede Farms with my boyfriend and a couple friends. I had a whole post planned, but I'm being distracted by the Real Housewives of Atlanta so you'll have to settle for some pictures...

My New Favorite Quote

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

First blog

Well, it's official. I have a blog. Weird. Maybe now I'll understand what all the fuss is about.
