Friday in NYC

I'm always happy when the weekend finally rolls around, but today I'm especially excited because in just a few hours I'll be in NYC! I'm meeting up with my two closest friends at Heartland Brewery for dinner and drinks. (I already have my eye on their Indian River Light Ale. Mmm!) The three of us have been friends since high school but with our busy (and very different) schedules it's unfortunately been a long time since just the three of us have gotten together. I can't wait for our long overdue girls night out!

Happy New Year everyone! Well it's that time of year again when people crowd the gyms trying to follow through on their resolution to lose weight. I would be happy to see new faces in January if I knew they would still be there in December but the reality is most people disappear after a few weeks. They sign up, waste their money and disrupt the routines of those who work out all year.

I arrived at the gym last night at my normal time to find an unusually packed parking lot. Once I was inside, I pushed my way through the crowd at the front desk to swipe my card. I moved on to the sign up sheets to reserve my preferred treadmill. Ah, treadmill's on the end so I'm only stuck by one smelly person, in front of a wall so no one is behind me and it is right in front of one of the TVs. Of course, it was taken and I had to take a machine in the middle. As I turned the corner, there were people everywhere. Almost every machine was being used. It seriously looked like a commercial.

As I headed for the treadmill I glanced around and noticed that every single person on a treadmill was walking. I'm all for walking, especially if you're just starting out, but putting the treadmill on the minimum speed, reading a magazine and holding on to the bars in front of you isn't exactly a workout. What's the point of joining a gym and vowing to work out if you're barely going to do anything while you're there? I'm not saying you need to start out running miles upon miles, as everyone is at a different fitness level, but at least challenge yourself a little.

I'm all for people trying to get in shape and improve their health but before joining a gym, they should really think about how committed they are to it.
